Fr. Amando Llorente, SJ
Fr. Amando Llorente, SJ, born August 24, 1918, succeeded Fr. Rey de Castro at the ACU just days after the latter’s death on February 2, 1952. He was of one mind with the founder on the vision for the institution and not one step was lost in the transition. He expanded apostolates beyond free schools for laborers, evangelization, training and medical support of indigents in Havana’s poorest neighborhood, visits to leper hospitals, catechism at Chinese seniors’ homes and poor children’s reformatory schools, vocational training, obtaining from the Holy See the appointment of the first Cuban Cardinal, to a model Pius XII Exercises House, redaction, printing and distribution of catechetical pamphlets, giving conferences throughout the island, etc. Most importantly, Fr. Llorente nurtured professionals that were beginning to fulfill the ACU promise by becoming Government Ministers, Sub-Secretaries, House Representatives, and newspaper men of note, setting the field of Psychiatry off on a new course, leading in the study of atomic energy in Cuba; it was a period during which things seemed disposed to allow a glimpse of the full realization of the Agrupación’s ideal: to influence Cuban thought and direct it toward Christ.
The Cuban communist revolution of 1959 forced Fr. Llorente and nearly all Agrupados off the island to start living anew in a foreign culture with a different language. Fr. Llorente, a tireless animator, pulled the widely dispersed members together and restored the ACU in Miami, Florida, opening chapters in various USA cities and Puerto Rico. Unconditionally committed to the ACU, he served it and its members until his death on April 28, 2010, after which the large Miami Campus was sold to allow the central ACU house to return to its roots, getting closer to universities and primed to open chapters on university campuses.
P. Amando Lorente, nacido el 24 de Agosto de 1918, sucedió al P. Rey de Castro en la ACU días después de su muerte el 2 de febrero de 1952. Era de un solo pensar con el fundador en cuanto a la visión para la institución y no perdió ni un paso durante la transición. El expandió los apostolados mas allá de las escuelas gratuitas para trabajadores, evangelización, formación y apoyo médico para barrios de indigentes en La Habana, visitas a leprosos internados, catecismo en casa de retirados chinos y escuelas reformatorias para niños pobres, formación vocacional, nombramiento por la Santa Sede del primer Cardenal cubano; agregando una casa modelo de Ejercicios Espirituales, redacción, impresión y distribucion de folletos catequética, conferencias por toda la Isla, etc.
Aún mas notable, el P. Llorente nutrió profesionales en el período en que tiene un Ministro de Gobierno, dos Subsecretarios, un Representante de la Cámara, tres periodistas de nota; en que los agrupados inician un nuevo derrotero en la aplicación de la Psiquiatría, en que uno se pone a la cabeza de los estudios atómicos en Cuba, y otro logra de la Santa Sede el nombramiento del primer Cardenal cubano; en que “Acción Cubana” tiene una intervención decisiva en uno de los acontecimientos políticos más importantes de la época; en que las cosas parecían estar dispuestas en tal forma que ya se vislumbraba la plena realización del ideal de la Agrupación: influir en el pensamiento cubano y dirigirlo hacia Cristo.
La Revolución Cubana de 1959 forzó al exilio al P. Llorente y a casi todos los Agrupados, quienes tuvieron que comenzar la vida de nuevo en un cultura foránea y en un idioma diferente. P. Llorente, incansable animador, convoco a los miembros dispersos por todo los EE.UU. y restauró la ACU en Miami, Florida, abriendo casas en varias ciudades estadounidenses y Puerto Rico. El sirvió a los congregantes con compromiso incondicional hasta su muerte el 28 de abril de 2010, después de cual se vendió el campus de Miami, permitiendo a la casa matriz de la ACU retornar a sus raíces, ubicándose más cerca de las universidades, con planes de establecerse dentro de cada Universidad.
